About
Bowdoin Socialists is an anti-capitalist and anti-fascist coalition at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, founded to provide student-run infrastructure for sustained engagement with political economy.
The organization is developing a speaker series that brings authoritative voices to Bowdoin while connecting students with political movements across Maine and coordinating with national and international organizations. Upcoming speakers include Mahmood Mamdani, the Herbert Lehman Professor of Government at Columbia University, who will deliver a virtual lecture in fall 2026, and Brace Belden, a labor organizer and former YPG volunteer fighter who will join students for a virtual conversation this spring. Programming is oriented around dialectical materialism, theories of value, histories of labor struggle, and contemporary debates across academic disciplines.
The goal is not to replace existing political organizations at Bowdoin but to provide more resources for examining the economic structures underlying political questions, so that each of these subjects receives analysis that moves beyond individual moral positions toward the systemic arrangements of power and production that generate and sustain them.
